About Us

A youth-led force inside the American Cancer Society.

The Society of Emerging Leaders (SEL) brings high school and university students into the heart of cancer advocacy, research support, and patient care.

Who We Are

The ACS Society of Emerging Leaders is a national initiative of the American Cancer Society designed to develop the next generation of public health leaders. Members lead initiatives that directly support ACS's mission to end cancer as we know it — for everyone.

We operate within ACS's century-old framework of research, education, and patient services, bringing the energy and creativity of student leaders to one of the most ambitious health missions in the world.

Contra Costa Chapter

What our chapter does locally.

Based across high schools in Walnut Creek, San Ramon, Pleasanton, Concord, and Danville, the Contra Costa County chapter runs year-round programming tailored to the East Bay community.

We host monthly educational webinars with professionals from the American Cancer Society and survivors, organize fundraising drives for the Lights of Hope Across America in collaboration with local stores and restaurants around the Contra Costa Counta

Our advocacy team works directly with California state legislators on tobacco control, screening access, and clinical trial equity, helping to translate youth voice into policy.

Our Story

Founded by students. Built for impact.

The Contra Costa chapter was founded in 2025 by two high school students who lost family members to cancer and wanted a structured way for their peers to contribute. What started as small after-school meetups has grown into a 100+ member organization spanning six high school campuses, with active partnerships across the Bay Area.

Our Pillars

Three commitments guide our work.

Advocacy

Champion policy that expands cancer screening, prevention funding, and equitable care across California.

Education

Deliver evidence-based cancer awareness programming to thousands of students and families each year.

Community

Stand alongside patients, survivors, and caregivers in Contra Costa County with hands-on volunteer support.
