SEL-Drafted Resolution Establishes Teen Girls' Reproductive Health Awareness Month
In April 2026, Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan introduced a resolution establishing September as Teen Girls' Reproductive Health Awareness Month in California — a resolution drafted and pitched entirely by SEL Member Sim Sidhu. The resolution recognizes the importance of early education around reproductive health as a preventive tool against cervical and ovarian cancers, conditions that disproportionately go undetected in young women due to lack of awareness and access to screenings.
Sim Sidhu developed the resolution concept through months of research and consultations with ACS CAN policy staff, identifying a gap in California's existing awareness calendar around adolescent reproductive health. After drafting the resolution language, she presented it to Assemblymember Bauer-Kahan's office, where it was taken up and formally introduced.
The Contra Costa County ACS SEL chapter played a direct role in building constituent support for the resolution ahead of its introduction. Chapter members gathered signatures, drafted and submitted constituent letters to the Assemblymember's office, and engaged local school wellness coordinators to signal grassroots demand from within the district. The chapter's organized outreach was cited by ACS CAN California staff as meaningful ground-level support that helped demonstrate community backing for the measure.
With September now officially designated, the chapter is already in early conversations with Contra Costa County school administrators about how to incorporate reproductive health education programming into the awareness month going forward.
